Once again, I'm striking a blow for the enduring relevance of great literature. Milton, you should be living at this hour! --S/f, EFP

About Me
- Edward F. Palm
- Forest, Virginia, United States
- A long time ago, my sophomore English teacher, Father William Campbell, saw something in my writing and predicted that I would someday become a newspaper columnist. He suggested the perfect title for my column--"Leaves of the Palm." Now that I have a little extra time on my hands I've decided to put Father Campbell's prediction to the test. I'm going to start using this blog site not just to reprint opinion pieces I've published elsewhere but to try to get more of my ideas and opinions out there. Feedback is welcome. To find out more about me, please check out my Web site: www.EdwardFPalm.com (Click on any of the photos below for an enlarged view.)

My columns for 15 December 2024 --S/f, EFP
This one also appears in this week's News & Advance, but without the coda. The Kitsap Sun gives me more print space than the News & Advance. --S/f, EFP

My thought for today --S/f, EFP
Phineas, our older dog, often won't eat his food. I'm reminded of how parents of my day used to try to shame kids into eating foods they didn't like: "The starving kids in China would love to have your Brussels sprouts!"

A comment on the passing scene --S/f, EFP
Take a lesson from history. Are you familiar with the 12th century dustup between England’s King Henry II and Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury the king himself appointed? When Becket wouldn’t bend to the king’s will, the king reportedly posed a seemingly rhetorical question in front of his council: “Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest?”
As Mark Twain once observed, “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes." It’s rhyming now. Don’t kid yourself. When Trump mused out loud about Liz Cheney facing the barrels of nine guns, he was calling for Cheney’s assassination. Let’s hope no MAGA knight answers Trump’s call. --S/f, EFP
