About Me

A long time ago, my sophomore English teacher, Father William Campbell, saw something in my writing and predicted that I would someday become a newspaper columnist. He suggested the perfect title for my column--"Leaves of the Palm." Now that I have a little extra time on my hands I've decided to put Father Campbell's prediction to the test. I'm going to start using this blog site not just to reprint opinion pieces I've published elsewhere but to try to get more of my ideas and opinions out there. Feedback is welcome. A Blast from the Past--Canoe After Shave

I recently realized that I have had this bottle of Canoe after shave since 1962 or 1963.  It was the most popular brand when I was in high school.  Girls professed to like Canoe, and guys wanted to believe it was an  aphrodisiac, guaranteed to make girls swoon and capitulate.  Sad to say, but it never lived up to that promise for me.
I moved up and out of my mother's house in 1965, and I had enough sense to know that after shave would not be needed at Parris Island. I forgot all about this bottle of Canoe until after my mother died in 1978.  It was still in her medicine cabinet, and I have been toting it around ever since.  My antique bottle of Canoe still has that nice fruity scent that I remember--perhaps a little too fruity for me at this stage of my life. But it does bring back memories of the days when "the world was all before" me. --EFP
