About Me

My photo
Forest, Virginia, United States
A long time ago, my sophomore English teacher, Father William Campbell, saw something in my writing and predicted that I would someday become a newspaper columnist. He suggested the perfect title for my column--"Leaves of the Palm." Now that I have a little extra time on my hands I've decided to put Father Campbell's prediction to the test. I'm going to start using this blog site not just to reprint opinion pieces I've published elsewhere but to try to get more of my ideas and opinions out there. Feedback is welcome. On Palm Sunday

My father's friends and family members used to refer to him as "Lucky Eddie--born on Palm Sunday." This column will explain why they thought of him--and he thought of himself--in that light. --S/f, EFP

In honor of Vietnam Veterans Day

This being Vietnam Veterans Day, I thought I'd share this column from 28 March 2021. Phil Klay's comment, I realize, is controversial. But I think his comment also applies to the home front during Vietnam. More than one soldier, Marine, or sailor in Vietnam received a letter complaining that "there is nothing good on TV"--or containing an equally inane comment about how life was tough back home too—or as we used to say, "Back in the World." --S/f, EFP

My current column --S/f, EFP

An update: So once again, all Trump is saying is, "GIVE WAR A CHANCE!" Who was it who first said, "The hallmarks of the Trump administration are "chaos and cruelty"? Whoever it was, he nailed it.--S/f, EFP

My current News & Advance and Kitsap Sun column --S/f, EFP

An Afterword [To the Kitsap Sun version]. The way in which the Trump administration has been smearing ICE’s victims in Minneapolis reminds me of the unrelenting pressure to rack up high body counts in Vietnam. “If it’s dead, it’s VC,” cynical careerist commanders used to say. With ICE facing unrelenting pressure to meet unrealistic arrest quotas, their watchword seems to have become, “If it’s dead, it’s a 'domestic terrorist.'”

My current column --S/f, EFP

Well, if ever a column was overtaken by events, this one has been. In war, the first casualty is truth. We all need to keep that in mind. --S/f, EFP
